Moving and Donation
Moving can be a great way to begin organizing yourself as you are able to figure out what items you want or do not want to bring with you.
The prospect of moving to a new residence can allow you to focus your efforts on getting rid of all the unused items and clothing that you don’t want to bring with you, as moving with these items can be both time-consuming and expensive. But rather than simply throwing away your unused materials, you can look to donate them to an organization that benefits those less fortunate.
At High Touch Moving, we want you to become more aware of the various organizations and charities in New York that will accept your various items and clothing donations, and allow you to give back to your community in a way that is thoughtful and beneficial to everyone involved. See below for where to donate clothing in New York.
Goodwill
One organization that accepts donations is Goodwill. Goodwill is a social enterprise that helps to fund job programs, employment services, and other community programs while accepting donations for clothing and other household items as part of its service.
According to Goodwill’s web page, in the previous year alone Goodwill accepted donations by more than 83 million people. These donations, which include clothing, furniture, electronics, hardware, and other appliances, are sold at Goodwill retail stores that help fund all of the social and job programs listed above. In 2012, Goodwill was able to provide 6.7 million people with career services. For more information visit their website.
Salvation Army
Another organization that accepts donations is The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is a charitable organization that provides humanitarian efforts in the United States and abroad, providing programs for relief for victims of disasters, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, feeding the homeless, and providing shelter and clothing to the underprivileged. The Salvation Army services the five boroughs of New York, including Long Island.
NYC Stuff Exchange
Another useful tool for those looking to donate their belongings is the NYC Stuff Exchange. This website provides, based on your zip code, borough, or direct address, a list of vendors that donate to charities and other organizations and where they are located. By checking off from a list of objects you want to donate which include appliances, books, cell phones, furniture, clothing, electronics, and more, you can find out what local New York vendors accept these donations, and which organizations they are sent to.
Donating your unused items and clothing can be an excellent way of ridding yourself of unwanted materials during your relocation, and in the process, giving back to the community and to those less fortunate. The list above is just some of the few resources available in New York, as there are many other organizations and charities that help to provide for those less fortunate.
At High Touch Moving, we hope you take advantage of these resources, and for assistance in your next New York move, we hope you contact us.
