Moving To Long Island City

Long Island City, ever heard of it? Probably not unless you’re from the NYC/Long Island area. Long Island City, preferably referred to as LIC by its inhabitants, is the place to look out for.  Located on the westernmost front of Queens, Long Island, it is a community on the rise. Let’s find out why it’s good to move to LIC.

New York City is notorious for its high property costs.

That is why people tend to live around the city rather than in it and commute to work.  However, as more and more people populate the surrounding area, rent is no longer as low as it used to be.

Most notable is Brooklyn.  Places like Williamsburg were the default place to move to when you wanted to avoid the soaring cost of the city.  It was hip, young, and close to Manhattan.  However, as more and more people move to Williamsburg, housing costs are starting to rival that of the City’s.  With Brooklyn no longer a viable option, what does that leave?  Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, yes, but most importantly, Long Island City.

If you’re planning on moving to New York any time soon, check out these reasons to relocate to LIC.

Location, location, location

Location is everything when you are moving.  How close is it to work?  How close is it to extracurricular activities?  How close is it to school?

LIC is the perfect place for those who work in the city.  It’s only a subway ride away with a number of different lines running through so you can always get to where you want.  The city is also located on the Western Front which means it is waterfront property.  You get a beautiful view of the East River.

Beyond that, you get a permanent view of the iconic steel and glass skyscrapers that are synonymous with New York City.  The metal glints in the sunlight during the day.  At night, the lights come on twinkling like Christmas lights and reflecting off the waters in vibrant hues that glow against the darkness.

Long Island City is close enough to New York City so that you still feel like you’re part of the action, but far enough away that you don’t have to be overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the streets.

What’s the Price Tag?

Property costs are an important thing to consider, especially in New York City.  What might get you a fully furnished apartment in a building with full amenities someplace else will most likely only get you a dilapidated one-room apartment with a front door that can’t be locked or unlocked without an odd dance ritual?

If money is a concern, then LIC is the place to look.  With hundreds of new rental apartments recently completed, thousands more are planned to be ready for use in 2015.  Just think about it.  Most of the apartments in LIC are newly built.  That means no issues with faulty electricity, leaky plumbing, or a number of other issues that comes with an old building. You get a brand new apartment for half the price of what it would cost in the city.  Their apartments also give you more space for your money.  And most of the buildings are equipped with a doorman, washing machines, and occasionally, a pool.  What’s not to love?

Community

There is so much to do on any given day in LIC.  The local culture is growing and expanding, so why miss the chance to watch it evolve before your eyes?  Check out the landmarks like the Socrates Sculpture Park or PS1.  Walk along the waterfront and enjoy the view of the city.  Explore the city and discover holes in the walls that serve the best food.  If you’re bored, hop on the train and head into Manhattan.  There is never a lack of things to do.

Another great thing about LIC is that it’s not as heavily populated.  There is a true sense of community that might not necessarily be found in NYC because of its heavy population.  You go to the corner store and the owner knows you by name.  It is a quiet, low-key neighborhood that is perfect if you want to raise your kids in a calm environment.
